Istria is famous for its coastline, but the visitors who remember it most vividly are usually those who ventured beyond the beaches. This compact peninsula packs in extraordinary diversity — ancient history, wild forests, world-class food, and some of the most beautiful medieval towns in Europe.

The Roman amphitheatre in Pula is one of the most striking ancient monuments in the world, let alone in Croatia. Dating back to the first century AD, it still hosts concerts and events today. Wander through the old town and you'll encounter the Temple of Augustus, triumphal arches, and remnants of city walls — all remarkably intact.

Inland Istria is truffle country. The forests around Buzet and Motovun are home to some of the finest truffles in Europe — including the white truffle, which rivals those found in Piedmont. From October onwards, truffle season transforms the region, with dedicated restaurants, festivals, and guided foraging experiences.

The hilltop villages of Motovun, Grožnjan, Oprtalj, and Hum are worth visiting at any time of year. Each has its own character: Motovun with its medieval walls and panoramic views; Grožnjan with its artist studios and music festival; Hum, proudly known as the smallest town in the world.

Wine and olive oil are taken seriously here. Istrian olive oil regularly wins international awards, and the local Malvazija and Teran wines are distinctive and delicious. Many agriturismo farms offer tastings with views of the countryside.

And of course, boat tours offer something entirely different from the beach experience — the open sea, dolphin encounters, Roman-era bays, and an Istria seen from a perspective most visitors miss completely.
