Is Brijuni Worth Visiting? Honest Guide

META DESCRIPTION: Is Brijuni National Park worth the trip? We give you an honest, balanced guide to help you decide — including what's great, what's not, and how to get the most from your visit.

Let's be direct: yes, Brijuni is absolutely worth visiting. But like any destination, how much you enjoy it depends greatly on how you choose to experience it.

The case for going is strong. The archipelago of 14 islands is genuinely beautiful, with turquoise water, fragrant pine forests, and a peacefulness that's hard to find along the Croatian coast in summer. The wildlife is a real highlight — the safari park on Veliki Brijun has elephants, zebras, and deer that were gifted to Yugoslav President Tito by various world leaders. Wandering among them feels wonderfully surreal. The Roman ruins, including a first-century villa and ancient fish ponds, are remarkably well preserved and largely uncrowded.

The water quality around the archipelago is exceptional — some of the cleanest in the Adriatic — making it a dream destination for swimming and snorkelling.

Now for the honest caveats. The standard national park ferry tour, while informative, is quite structured and can feel rushed. You spend a fixed amount of time on the main island, follow a set route by mini-train, and return on a schedule. If spontaneity matters to you, this may feel limiting.

The solution most experienced visitors recommend is booking a private or shared boat tour with a local operator rather than, or in addition to, the ferry. This way you see the lesser-visited islands, find the best swimming spots, and experience the archipelago at your own pace.

Brijuni also works well as part of a broader Istria trip rather than the sole reason to visit. Combine it with Pula, Rovinj, and some time spent on the water, and it becomes a highlight rather than the whole story. In short: go, but plan thoughtfully.
